The Head of R&D for Insurance Products is responsible for product and platform innovation, development and delivery in EXL’s Life and Annuity Insurance Division representing over $90M in annual revenues. The role is directly responsible for product development and innovation of the LifePro Digital Suite platform in the US market and the eLissia platform in the UK and European markets. The role will also lead the build and delivery of EXL’s next generation end to end Insurance acquisition, engagement and servicing solution. Other direct responsibilities include product and technology service delivery for client implementations, ongoing billable and maintenance servicing work directly with client engagements.


The position will operate in a matrix environment reporting directly EXL’s Chief Technology Officer as an active member in the leadership team in the Global Products and Platform organization. The position also has strong dotted line alignment directly to the P&L Business Owner of the L&A Insurance Division and peer alignment to the General Managers leading the LifePro and eLissia lines of business and participating as an active member in their respective leadership teams.


The position will directly and indirectly be responsible for approximately 100+ employees across locations in Indianapolis, Indiana; London, UK; and Noida, India.

  • Active participation in Division and Business unit leadership teams
  • Active participation in CTO leadership team
  • Participates in developing the vision and strategy for the overall product domain
  • Provides global R&D New Product Development and innovation leadership for the Life & Annuity software platforms and business
  • Initiates and directs innovation and product development programs for effective introduction of new products and processes
  • Collaborates with the Life & Annuity leadership, sales, global business leaders, strategic marketing, and key stakeholders in the development of the product innovation funnel.
  • Maintain an overview of state-of-the-art technology development, best practices, and trends within the industry and its impact or potential impact on business operations and goals, including digital (web/mobile), analytics, cloud, architecture, modern software dev methodologies, and user experience.
  • Ensure the company’s awareness of key technologies and make investment recommendations and decisions accordingly.
  • Day-to-day tactical delivery of all the Life & Annuity technology platforms and initiatives
  • Coordinate, coach, and inspire a global and distributed set of agile teams including Development, Testing, Configuration Mgmt, DevOps, Architecture, User Experience, and Tech Services/Support teams.
  • Co-create and execute on the multi-year technology roadmap, strategy, budget and resource plan for all the Life & Annuity technology product and platforms.
  • Partner with the sales organization to close client accounts, building strong relationships with peers at strategic accounts, participating in client meetings/conferences
  • Represent the company’s Life & Annuity organization at select Life & Annuity technology conference
  • Instills a feeling and culture of shared responsibility for the full product domain across all the functional teams
  • Effectively scale Agile/Scrum across the product domain


  • Bachelor’s degree (B.E./B. Tech preferred), MBA desired
  • 15+ years’ experience Leading commercial software product development and delivery of multiple products in the Insurance domain or equivalent experience in large scale Enterprise or Cloud-based solutions
  • Passionate about business results, with a strong sense of execution, accountability, metrics and ownership. - Strong organization and prioritization skills
  • Ability to communicate confidently at the C-level to build meaningful internal and external relationships in business organizations
  • History of collaborating closely and effectively with delivery, operations, and practice teams in business development, relationship management, and competency building scenarios
